Why Study Theory?

Understanding music makes
you better at playing it.

Music theory is the language of music. When you understand it, everything else clicks faster โ€” you read music more confidently, you learn pieces more quickly, you understand what you're hearing, and you play with more intention and expression.

At SYNERGY, theory isn't a chore bolted onto lessons as an afterthought. It's woven into how we teach โ€” either through dedicated group theory classes or incorporated directly into private lessons for students who prefer that approach.

Theory is also a compulsory co-requisite in the RCM curriculum from Level 5 onward. Starting early โ€” even before it's required โ€” makes a real difference when exam time comes.

The Maestro Mart is SYNERGY's in-studio student rewards store โ€” and one of the things our students love most about coming to lessons. Private students and group theory students earn Beethoven Bucks by setting goals with their teacher and achieving them.
Goals can be anything meaningful to the student: consistent home practice, mastering a challenging piece, passing a theory concept, performing in a recital. When the goal is met, the Bucks are earned โ€” and can be spent at the Maestro Mart on real, physical prizes.
How students earn Beethoven Bucks:
๐Ÿ
Practice Goals
Consistent home practice is one of the most meaningful goals a student can set. Meeting a practice target earns Bucks.
๐Ÿ“–
Theory Goals
Completing a theory level, passing an in-house exam, or mastering a concept counts as a goal.
๐ŸŽช
Performance Goals
Performing in a recital, passing an RCM exam, or auditioning for a program are all goal-worthy milestones.
Theory Games Weeks

Theory that feels like play.

Around major events and holidays throughout the year, our regular theory class schedule gives way to Theory Games Weeks โ€” where students reinforce what they've been learning through cards, games, challenges, and activities designed to make theory concepts stick in a way that actually sticks.

It's one of the most looked-forward-to parts of the SYNERGY calendar. Students still learn โ€” they just don't always realize it.

How Our Classes Work

Students work at their own pace.

Theory at SYNERGY isn't a classroom where everyone moves together. Students work independently through their materials โ€” progressing when they're genuinely ready, not when a lesson plan says so. Teachers circulate, check in, and guide each student individually.

This means a student who grasps a concept quickly can move ahead without waiting โ€” and a student who needs more time doesn't get left behind. The group setting provides the energy and motivation; the individual pacing provides the results.

๐Ÿƒ
Self-paced progression
Move through levels when you're genuinely ready โ€” not on a fixed schedule. No one is left behind, and no one is held back.
๐Ÿ‘ค
Individual attention in a group setting
Teachers work with each student individually during group class โ€” checking understanding, giving feedback, and keeping everyone on track.
๐Ÿ“š
Proven curriculum
The SYNERGY Method series and RCM Celebrate Theory books form the backbone of every theory class โ€” trusted materials refined over years of teaching.
๐ŸŒ
In-studio or online
Group theory is available in-studio at both Brampton locations, or online โ€” easy to combine with an online instrument lesson in a single session.
Common Questions

Theory class FAQs.

What age can students start group theory?+
We generally encourage students ages 6โ€“7 to begin group theory classes. Younger students โ€” particularly the 4โ€“5 year olds in our early music programs โ€” often have theory woven directly into their private lessons instead, as the group classroom format can be a lot for young children. Adults are welcome at any level.
Do I need to be taking a private lesson to join group theory?+
No โ€” group theory is open to students in any SYNERGY program. It's most commonly taken back-to-back with a private lesson for convenience, but students can also register for theory as a standalone class.
How much does group theory cost?+
Group theory classes are $12 per class. They run 30 minutes and are available in-studio at both Brampton locations or online.
When should students switch to private theory lessons?+
Many students begin transitioning to private theory lessons around the RCM Level 6โ€“7 practical level. At this stage, the theory requirements โ€” especially Harmony, History, and Analysis โ€” become more complex and benefit from a more flexible, individualized lesson plan. Your instrument teacher will let you know when the time is right.
Do you prepare students for RCM theory exams?+
Yes. We prepare students for RCM Centre theory exams at all levels โ€” from Rudiments through to Advanced Harmony, History, and Analysis. Mock exams are included in prep. Note that SYNERGY also offers our own in-house theory exams, which are separate from RCM Centre exams.
What are SYNERGY's in-house theory exams?+
SYNERGY's in-house theory exams are our own graded assessments โ€” not affiliated with any external examining body. They're a great way for students to mark their progress, celebrate milestones, and build exam confidence in a lower-pressure setting before attempting formal centre exams.
What is the Maestro Mart?+
The Maestro Mart is SYNERGY's in-studio student rewards store. Private lesson students and group theory students earn Beethoven Bucks by setting and achieving goals with their teacher โ€” practice goals, theory milestones, performance accomplishments, and more. Those Bucks can then be spent on real prizes at the Maestro Mart, including toys, candy, stickers, pens, notepads, and the wildly popular hand-crocheted amigurumi (currently on a waitlist!).
